Mastering botanical drawing is a real achievement on your artistic journey. So if you have sometimes struggled with learning to draw flowers we can help. Here we show you how to draw a beautiful peony with uni-Pin pens.
A comprehensive guide
Here’s a complete tutorial to teach you how to draw a delicate peony with your uni-PIN pens. Granted, it’s not the simplest of flowers, but with our advice, even the most inexperienced artists will be surprised with the result. Take your tools and free the inner artist in you!
You will need
For this floral fancy, you will need:
- A sketchbook or a sheet of art paper
- A mechanical pencil we recommend a Kuru Toga mechanical pencil
- An eraser
- Three uni-PIN fine line drawing pens, 0.8, 0.1 and 0.05 tips. Of course you can use more tip sizes to maximise the variation of depths in the lines of your drawing
Step one: Create an outline
To draw a beautiful peony with uni-Pin pens start by creating a rough pencil outline. Sketch free-hand, a round shape in the centre surrounded by two oval shapes with your pencil. Use the example above as a guide.
Step two: Build your petals
Using our illustrations as your guide, sketch the petals inside your oval shapes with your pencil.
Once you’ve made your outer strokes, draw lines between the large and medium oval to create curved petals.
Now inside the oval make upward shapes as illustrated above.
Then make final strokes in the inside of your flower. You should now have the basic flower shape that will allow you to draw a beautiful peony with uni-Pin pens.
Step three: Define with uni-PIN
Now you can draw a beautiful peony with uni-Pin pens. Once your pencil sketch is ready, go back over the lines carefully with your 0.8 Pin pen.
Step four: Clean up
Let the ink from your black Uni Pin dry for a moment, then rub out the pencil lines.
Step five Add further detail with uni-PIN
Add the details inside the petals. The extra fine 0.05 and 0.1mm tips of the black uni-PIN pens are ideal for delicate lines and tiny dots and detailing.
Step six: Add flower centre and shading
You can now take your 0.8mm tip to add any further definition or missing elements to your drawing. Why not add a few leaves around your bloom for example, or take advantage of the robust top to create a shadowy area inside the petals in the centre to create depth and contrast.

Once you have added your details and are happy with them you can take a step back and bask in your accomplishment. Now you can draw a beautiful peony with uni-Pin pens.
